Call: VII Mediterranean School of Complex Networks
Event Details
We are glad to announce the call for the seventh edition of the summer School that we will organize this year, after a 2 years break due to COVID19.
From 2022 the Mediterranean School of Complex Networks and the International School of Informatics and Dynamics in Complex Networks have joined their forces into a single event.
The new board of directors include, in alphabetic order: Prof. Alex Arenas (URV, Spain), Prof. Vincenza Carchiolo (UniCT, Italy), Prof. Manlio De Domenico (UniPD, Italy), Prof. Mattia Frasca (UniCT, Italy) and Prof. Giuseppe Mangioni (UniCT, Italy)
From 2023, the editions of MSCX will alternate between other locations in the Mediterranean area and Salina.
Please, feel free to redistribute among potential attendants and accept our apologies in advance if you receive this email more than once.

25 Jun - 02 July 2022
Salina, Italy
In the last decade, network theory has been revealed to be a perfect instrument to model the structure of complex systems and the dynamical process they are involved in. The wide variety of applications to social sciences, technological networks, biology, transportation and economics, to cite just some of them, showed that network theory is suitable to provide new insights into many problems.
Given the success of the past editions (2014-2015-2016-2017-2018-2019) of the Mediterranean School of Complex Networks, we call for applications to the 7th Edition in 2022. If you are curious about the past editions, you can find more information in the new "From the School" section of the Journal of Complex Networks: https://doi.org/10.1093/comnet/cny035
The goal of this school is twofold:
- Provide a theoretical background to students (Master, PhD) and young researchers in the field, with particular attention to current trends in Network Science;
- Promote philosophical and scientific exchange between all participants, i.e., lecturers and attendants.
For this reason, the program will involve lectures from experts in different fields (social science, game theory, biology, physics, etc) for 70% of the duration of the school. The remaining time will be dedicated to student activities (including talks, debates, "social network games").
Lecturers
- Nathan Kutz (University of Washington) - Discovering governing equations: from network structure to dynamics
- Fabrizio de Vico Fallani (INRIA) - Network Neuroscience
- Jesus Gomez-Gardeñez (Universidad de Zaragoza) - Spreading Processes on Networks

How to participate
The school will take place in Salina, a small island in the north of Sicily (Italy). Salina, fully covered by green vegetation and surrounded by the sea, represents a suitable small and quiet environment to achieve the purposes of this school.
Registration is mandatory for participants, visit the webpage.
In-person attendance.
School fee is 650 euros, lectures, transfers from Catania to Salina, and accommodation are included. School fee + social events is 750€.
In-person participation is limited to 30 attendants, due to COVID19 restrictions. Early applications will be appreciated.
Please, note that meals are NOT included (except for social dinner).
COVID19: In response to the current pandemic emergency, the organizers will develop an adequate plan for safety, in agreement with current laws. Note that in-person mode might require COVID19 testing before and during the school, as well as the requirement of valid certifications for traveling and accessing public places (e.g., restaurants).
Online attendance.
We plan a hybrid mode to allow for remote attendance. The school fee in this case is 150€.
Online participation is limited to 70 attendants. Early applications will be appreciated.
This year, we will grant two scholarships, sponsored by the Complex Systems Society, that will cover the School fee only. The MDPI journal “Condensed Matter” will sponsor the prizes.
Important Dates
15 March 2022 Early registration deadline (no payment needed at this stage)
